I first went on holiday to Kefalonia as a teenager and have kept going back – both on holiday and a few years ago to film an episode of A Place in the Sun. I love it because it’s an easy place to visit – it has its own airport with direct flights from the UK – but it is still really tranquil.
The town of Argostoli is a lively port but is easy to escape, and the further north you go, the more breathtaking the scenery becomes. The area around Fiskardo, in the far north of the island, is where Louis de Bernières wrote Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, and is the only part of the island that escaped a major earthquake in 1953, so the locals believe it is blessed. It’s a bit of a schlep to get there, which means it’s exceedingly quiet and utterly wonderful.
You can take a boat from there to the unspoilt island of Ithaka, and also near Fiskardo is the village of Assos – a picture-postcard place with whitewashed houses. Part of the Captain Corelli movie was shot here and they couldn’t have chosen anywhere more picturesque.
Just 3km south is one of the best beaches in the world, Myrtos, with powder-fine, white sand and turquoise water. I’ve sometimes found myself alone there because it’s tricky to get too – an unforgettable experience.
Plenty of package holidays are available to Kefalonia, but I’d recommend booking a flight and searching out a villa or apartment in Fiskardo, overlooking the harbour – that’s what I’ll be doing when I go back.
