| Make your vote count for our island, not your own pocket. Dear fellow citizens of Kefalonia We need to think about the upcoming election very carefully. Please circulate this letter to others. Typically we have only thought of how to best line our own pockets, often at the expense of our neighbour and the long term economic development of our island. We vote for those that promise to do us a personal favour; give our child a job, give our company a contract, or tell us something first to give us the advantage. Often these promises are false and yet we still give away our vote to the same political group’s year in year out because we have always done so. These people line their own pockets with government and EU money without investing in our island and thus fail to secure our economic future. They fail us all, and our children need to leave the island to find work. The law has recently changed and we need to elect only one Mayor for the entire island. Who will best represent the interests of our island and ensure economic growth and development for all? Since that last elections what infrastructure, services and amenities have you seen in your region? How and where have they spent those millions of Euros? By my reckoning they have done little and will continue to do little if re-elected. They will however continue to give us plenty of corruption, bribery and nepotism. For 35 years they have secured the personal interests of a few in the Lassi area, why has Lassi not come under the “town plan” after so many years? Why do they keep on obstructing numerous proposals even at state government level to bring Lassi under the “town plan”? There are obviously personal interests at stake! How much personal land has been confiscated under the preposterous “forestry law” which has seen the forestry Dasarxes get very rich off the backs of the real and owners who struggle to get their land back. They are confiscating peoples olive groves and agricultural plots of lands. Pilaros is the one location on our island which is the exception. Actions speak louder than words. The actions of Marko Costilinis, Mayor of Pilaros (and his council) are a strong indicator of a man with vision who has the best interest of his region in his heart. On a very limited budget he has transformed Pilaros, and every Euro is accounted for. His budgets are transparent to the point that they are published in the local paper. The Pilaros region is truly inspiring and full credit must go to Marko and his council for their foresight and fortitude. Their efforts have brought infrastructure, services and amenities to the area that benefits all the local people. The region now attracts more tourist than ever before and those tourist dollars helps grow the local economy. Since becoming Mayor, Marko and his council have undertaken many and various projects around the region. Perhaps one of their most significant achievements has been to get most of the Mirtos region TROPOPIISI from ZOE. For many of us in Argosoli who have family land zoned under this draconian law we understand the significant effort this has taken. Pilaros now enjoys infrastructure and a host of services and amenities not seen anywhere else in Kefalonia. I will outline some of the projects undertaken by that council. Clean streets and public areas, local rubbish collections and recycling stations. Many new roads and foot- paths with improved and quicker access to the Monastery, Falari and Argosoli. Free tourist buses and public buses that connect all the villages. Sport stadiums, 3 new soccer fields’, basketball courts and 3 new children play areas. Three new children’s schoolrooms. Museums, stocked library, hall for public gatherings and performances. Outdoor theater, 8 new plaza’s with seating and lighting. Internet services to connect Pilaros to the rest of the world, and provide employment opportunities for their young people. Tourist information office, local advertising literature. They also publish books and a by-monthly local newspaper to inform the locals of projects and events in their region. Renovated, efficient government offices. A world class, beautifully maintained marina with cobbles, lighting and all services for yachts. This project alone has brought in more international tourists who are happy to contribute to the local economy. Two clubrooms for the elderly with organized entertainment and outings. Bloodbank – a vital service for islands isolated from the mainland. Doctors service that visit at home, especially good for the elderly. Water tanks for water collections for farmers, fire breaks to protect the villages, new farming access roads. New tree planning and re-vegetation projects to minimize erosion and beautify the area. Many, many sponsored cultural, historical, religious and festival events all year round for both locals and tourists. The projects are endless and too many to list in full but the benefits are many. What could Marko do for all of Kefalonia? Imagine the extra employment generated in the area just from these projects alone, not to mention the tourism. Kefalonian’s this is our chance to make our vote count for the benefit of the island. If we ensure economic development and growth for the island we ensure our futures and those of our children who will stay on the island.
